For many girls in rural India, getting an education is a challenge. They struggle against poverty, customary belief and attitudes devaluing girls and a limited number of schools. For many of them, being accepted into a Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalay (KGBV) school is a dream come true.
But for the teachers at the KGBV schools, they are also facing many challenges. The KGBV schools are government run boarding schools but they employ different teaching methods than regular government schools including a much more interactive teaching style. Plus, the students have a wide variety of educational backgrounds so the teachers must be more flexible and creative in their approaches.
Join My Village and CARE India are working to help both the teachers and students succeed by supporting a bridge program that helps these girls gain critical social skills including working in groups, problem solving, critical thinking, persistence in the face of difficulty and respect for others and themselves. By training the teachers in how to help the girls achieve these goals, the teachers also become more comfortable in a dynamic teaching environment and encourage the girls to participate in class. These bridge programs have been so successful that they have now been made mandatory in all KGBVs in Uttar Pradesh.
By providing more opportunities for girls to participate in this bridge program and ensuring teachers are able to effectively conduct the program in their classes, Join My Village is helping these girls prepare for second school and a better life.
