Vanessa Banda reading out to her friends while at her primary school
Vanessa Banda reading out to her friends while at her primary school Tawina Phiri, Harriet Chenembu and Maria Kamwendo during their primary school days at Lingadzi. A grade three student at Lingadzi primary – she is in the lower class but has already started benefiting from the reference materials Vanessa Banda, Tiyamike Banda and Mwayi Banda used the reference materials to their best. Tiyamike, in a new environment at Secondary School but very determined and confident. Vanessa and Tiyamike relaxing at Santhe secondary school – lucky to have an old friend in a new place.

Join My Village gave them reference materials in primary school and now it’s their time for a new beginning in their life and a new generation of scholarship girls.

When JMV supplied the reference materials to 15 rural primary schools in the district of Kasungu in central Malawi, little did the school girls know that one day they will benefit from a Join My Village scholarship as well. The 300 reference materials that Join My Village has provided to date have benefited more than 4,000 girls in these primary schools. Out of these girls more than 250 sat for their secondary school entrance exams in June and 102 have made it to various secondary schools and started their secondary studies in October. The 102 girls who have made it to the secondary schools have joined the 380+ scholarship girls who are already supported by Join My Village.

Vanessa Banda, Mwai Banda, Tiyamike Banda, Maria Kamwendo and Harriet Chenembu are some of the girls who proved that reference materials are essential to improving a girl’s education.  These girls are growing up, heading off to secondary school, and now they can talk about their dreams to become professionals in various fields.

It is so encouraging when you see girls working extra hard and, with just a little helping hand, realizing dreams they previously thought would be impossible, such as being able to continue their education into secondary school like the way Vanessa and her friends have done. She and some  of her former primary school friends are now studying at Santhe Secondary School, which is one of the most prestigious and competitive private schools in the region. My visit to Santhe Secondary School made me feel confident that these girls will be top of the Form One class as evidenced by the remarks their class teacher made to me. They are scoring not less than 80% in most of the subjects, a thing that every parent would love to hear!

Congratulations to all our girls for the new life they have just begun. Let them continue working extra hard and become what they want - doctors, nurses, accountants and teachers!
